The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders noted that a boost in home delivery had led to approximately 100,000 vans being registered within the first quarter of 2015 – an increase of 22.3 per cent during the same timescale back in 2014.
Figures showed that 108,456 commercial vehicles had been registered in those first three months – resulting in being the highest number of lorries and vans ever to be sold since the trade body recorded this data back in 1987.
An SMMT representative explained: “Van registrations have risen consistently over the past two years, mainly as a result of steadily increasing business confidence and a range of attractive finance deals. The move towards online shopping and home deliveries is an important contributor to this growth – particularly that of large vans.”
Ford made up for more than a fifth of van sales within this quarter, with the mid-sized Transit Custom proving the most popular with 12,627 sales.
