An Post is a major commercial organisation in Ireland providing a wide range of services which encompass postal, communication, retail and money transmission services.
An Post is one of Ireland's largest companies, directly employing over 9,500 people through its national network of retail, processing and delivery points.
An Post provides agency services for Government Departments, the National Treasury Management Agency, An Post National Lottery Company and other commercial bodies.
Every day, 4,200 An Post staff deliver over 3.5 million items of mail to 2.1 million homes and businesses from 4,500 post boxes and more than 1,200 Post Offices nationwide.
Over 1,400 staff are involved in processing mail for onward delivery, while almost 1,000 Post Office clerks provide customers with a range of products and services at Post Office counters.
In addition, around 1,200 Post Office contractors, employing a further 1,000 staff, provide Post Office services in dedicated outlets and within larger retail outlets around Ireland.
A further 180 individuals operate postal agencies for An Post while there are now more than 3,000 Postpoint agents nationwide.
In 2009, An Post celebrates its silver jubilee - 25 years as a commercial State company. An Post and its sister company, Telecom Eireann, were created in 1984 out of what was then the Department of Posts and Telegraphs.
The technological and structural changes of the last 25 years have helped An Post deal with one of the greatest challenges the Post Office has faced. Charged with the responsibility of providing a nationwide postal service at an affordable cost, the Post Office has always had a degree of monopoly protection so that it could deliver throughout Ireland at a fixed price. Reduced over the years, that monopoly assistance is due to disappear completely in 2011 but the primary responsibility for operating the State’s postal service is likely to remain with An Post.
